Why did I do a juice cleanse?
1-A friend wanted to do one and was looking for camaraderie. She’s trying to jump start on healthy eating habits and this seemed like it might help.
2-I was curious about cleanses and about my own reaction to it. Will I be tough enough to last it out? Can I handle only drinking juice?
(BTW, I did not do any workouts during this time. I’m not stupid. It was a well deserved break.)
How did it go?
Pre-Cleanse: apparently you’re supposed to prep by eating clean (avoid meat, alcohol, caffeine) for a few days in advanced. I avoided red meat for 2 days (ate fish though), caffeine (oops – the cappuccino Lara bar I had on my bike ride had caffeine in it)
Day 1 – “clearing out”: We picked up our juices promptly at 8 AM on Monday and drank the first one while catching up on the weekend. Once I got back home, I weighed myself for reference purposes. I’m curious how much I lose, and if any stays off after I finish the cleanse. I laid low for the most part on Monday, doing some light housework and reading. I did some errands in the afternoon and got a bit more tired particularly as it came to be close to time for my next juice (and I wasn’t quite home yet). I didn’t feel too hungry — just foggy. Once home, I chugged the juice and read some more. I ended up napping through the next juice time and woke up hungry. Last juice of the day (Cashew Milk) seemed sour. I didn’t think it was too odd until I texted Ali and she said hers was incredibly sweet.
Day 2 – “being clean”: I woke up and weighed myself – 6 lb lost! WTF. I chugged so much water yesterday that I’m not sure why that happened. We’ll see what keeps going. I’m in the office and trying to keep it on the DL that I’m juice cleansing. A few co-workers are pretty nosy on eating habits, and I’d just prefer to not talk/explain too much about this. 2 PM and so far so good. I’m starting to feel a bit hungry now, but I’ve got a little while before my next juice. Time to go chug more water then! When I got home, I tried my cashew milk and it was sour again – I walked to the juice store to get replacements… yes much sweeter & milkier. By the end of the day, I’m kind of tired of the juice drinking, and concerned that my teeth don’t feel like they’re getting any action for the past two days. It actually isn’t hunger, but just a sense of chewing that I’m missing. It gets into my head enough that I actually end up cheating and have a palm size amount of cashews. (If you are going to cheat, they recommend you have a food that’s already in the juices). I feel calmed after eating the cashews.
Day 3 – “ok when can I eat”: I woke up and weighed myself – 1 more pound lost. I’m kind of ready to be done with this, not because the juices are not enough or not good, but I’m missing variety and the power to choose my food intake. My legs are also starting to get the “you haven’t worked out” itch. I’m glad I rode my bike to work – it’s an low impact, low effort way to keep them moving. I have been doing more lunges/ squats randomly at different points these past few days as I start to feel the “sloth” take over my body and realize I don’t like the way that feels. After work I’m heading to a happy hour event so I’m curious how things will go there. I bring my two end of day juices and have one of them instead of beer. I’m surprised that I’m not seduced by the smells of chips/burgers and beer and am fine drinking my juice.
Day 4: No more juice! I weigh myself in the morning to see the final weight loss – 1 more pound for a total of 8 lbs lost. I’d scheduled a personal trainer workout for Thursday morning since most of the earlier week was jacked up from the juice cleanse. Report: Not the best idea. I woke up & had some breakfast, but that wasn’t enough to fuel me through an intense workout. I ate more throughout the day, keeping vegetarian, but I felt pretty crappy throughout the entire day. Tired, stomachache, heachache. I definitely felt worse this day, and worse after eating, than any of the days on the cleanse. I head to bed super early, and am glad I woke up on Friday feeling good.
Today (Day 6): I have gained one pound back after 2 days of eating, including a few donuts & dinner & drinks out last night. It’ll be interesting to see how long it is before the rest comes back, or if I keep some off with my regular eating habits.
- An opportunity to separate myself from my normal eating habits to evaluate when I might be eating not for hunger.
- 3 days of stuffing myself with only high vitamin veggies & fruits
- Satisfied a curiosity
- Felt cleansed
- Figuring out if I am strong enough to say “no” to the eating temptations of the world
- Feeling sucky the next day.
- The fuzzy feeling that came over on my teeth. I started brushing my teeth at work for the first time ever.
- Not working out for a few days and wishing I could.
Would I do it again? Probably not given that I’m pretty active and this definitely limited workouts. It’s not a good idea if one is training for something intense. I did like the mental benefits though, and would consider a one-day cleanse after a highly gluttonous period to help jump start healthier eating habits again. Say after a vacation or the holidays.
